Samuel Elkins was hanged on July 18th 1894 in Winchester after he pleaded guilty at Hampshire Assizes for the murder of William Mitchel, a tramyard manager at Bournemouth. Mitchell had reported Elkins for a breach of duty, and in a rage Elkins had bought a gun and shot him dead. Hanged by James Billington on a scaffold constructed in a shed that normally housed the prison van.
